Positioned at the head of a fiord in Western Prince William Sound, the community of Whittier in Alaska is a major port for the southeastern part of the state. With a vast quantity of freight being delivered to the port, Whittier has become a major community in Alaska. It is also a focal point for marine activity.
A feature of the community, which makes it different from the majority of communities, is the fact that much of its infrastructure has been funded by the government.
While most other communities have been established and developed through the hard work or local businesses, organizations and public agencies, Whittier has expanded as a result of funding from government projects, many of which were headed by the United States Army following the Second World War.
