The City of Las Palmas
A must on anybody's itinerary is a visit to the city of Las Palmas , which is the capital of the island and located in the northeastern part. Here you will see some magnificent scenery, which is made up of two bays and their beautiful beaches. This place boasts an important historical and cultural heritage most of which can be found in the district of Vegueta, the oldest quarter of the town. Las Palmas is a bustling city overflowing with ambience, history and culture. It holds the distinction of being one of the most important ports in all of Europe.
Here you can enjoy all kinds of water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, diving and anything you could imagine doing when you're around water. There are so many places to visit such as the Cathedral de Santa Ana which is the first artistic construction in the Canary Islands . The construction was started around 1500 and completed almost four centuries later, which gives you not only Gothic styles but also Renaissance and Neoclassic. Another place to see is Triana. Here you will find a multitude of shops ranging from tiny old-fashioned shops to big chain and department stores and up market boutiques. You will also see the combination of architectural skills from the 18 th , 19 th and 20th centuries. This entire street was declared a national historic monument.
Playa de las Canteras Bordered on the east by Santa Catalina and in the north by La Isleta you will find the district of Playa de las Canteras. This was the Island 's first tourist resort and here you will find lots of hotels, offices, shops, restaurants and much more. It also holds one of Spain 's best urban beaches. At the southern end you will find a landscape promenade that leads to Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, which is a masterpiece of modern architecture and is very impressive.
This is also the home to the Las Palmas Philharmonic Orchestra. This building was constructed in solid natural stone and holds ten concert halls. Here you can experience operas, concerts as well as film festivals.
