Almeria
Known as the driest and warmest region of Europe, spending a vacation in Almeria is an excellent way to escape the cold northern climate. This is also the site of the largest nudist beach in Europe – El Playazo. The name of the city and the province comes from the Arabic term meaning Mirror of the Sea and dates back to the 10 th century. It was founded in 995 as the principal method of defense and a large castle was built here. The area suffered greatly during the Crusades because it was such a valuable prize to both sides.
Sights
No visit to Almeria would be complete without a tour of the Garden Fortress. This magnificent citadel was built in 955 and consists of three enclosures. The gardens, such as Saliente Bastion, Vela Wall and the bell of Santa Maria del Mayor are outstanding. The palace rooms are well-preserved and will give you a good look at what life was like thousands of years ago. A typical Muslim house has also been reconstructed on the grounds.
There is another fortress in Almeria , which was built to protect the town against attacks by pirates. This is the southern fortress with battlements and embrasures. The altarpieces inside the Gothic chapel are marvels to behold. Take a tour of the small church dating back to the 16 th century and the Puerta de Purchena – a square in the center of the old town where there are many historic buildings.
Excursions
Take a trip to the archaeological sites at Los Millares where you can view the excavation of settlements dating back to the Bronze Age. Only 30 miles north of Almeria , you can have fun at Mini-Hollywood, a replica site of the Old West. Located to the east of the city, you can visit the natural preserve of Cabo de Gata-Nijar. Here you will find untouched bays as well as the village of Mojacar . There is a myriad of landscapes for you to enjoy from mountains to deserts.
Beaches There are several beaches for you to take advantage of in the Almeria area. Depending on what you are looking for, you can find space on a crowded beach or have a full beach all to yourself. Some of the beaches in the area include:
La Garrofa Beach – this is small and secluded, but is open to the winds. Therefore, you must exercise caution when swimming here. There are cliffs on all three sides and the waters are quite deep.
San Telmo Beach – also fitted in between cliffs and has a difficult climb to the top from the beach itself. This is one beach that very few tourists visit because of the steep descent and ascent. The waters here are very deep, but they are secluded from the winds. If you climb to the castle, you will have an exceptional view of Almeria and the bay.
Las Olas Beach – this is a small beach that does not get a lot of traffic. It is quiet and calm and has an exquisite restaurant where you can taste the seafood of the region.
San Miguel Beach – boisterous and crowded are two words to describe this beach. This beach is also known as Zapillo Beach and Las Conchos beach. There are many bars and restaurants along the promenade.
Neuva Almeria – an excellent choice if you want to take advantage of the wealth of watersports. This beach is located next to a windsurfing school and has clam waters. There are many restaurants, bars and beach services available.
