Cartagena
Founded in 250 B.C., Cartagena has been an important base for the Spanish navy since the 16 th century. Its importance as a naval seaport has not diminished and it is the site of a large naval base. Here you will see a walled town showing how it was defended in earlier times. There are many archaeological sites in the city and ruins have been uncovered that has been identified as being a temple to Melqart. It is here that Isidore of Seveille, the Director of the Holy See was born.
This tourist city is a very quiet place to relax and enjoy a pleasant vacation. In fact, it is only recently that Cartagena has begun to be popular with tourists. It is known for its good weather, the best in Spain, and is warm and dry just about all year round. The mild climate makes it perfect at any time of the year. The landscapes are breathtakingly beautiful, so much so that you can sit and gaze around you for hours on end.

National Museum of Underwater Archaeology Here you can walk through several exhibition halls that show the wealth and variety of sea life. You can also learn about the marine history of the area as well as view the treasures that have been found beneath the sea. There are also several pieces of naval architecture on display that date back hundreds of years.
Municipal Archaeological Museum of Cartagena This the most important museum in the city and is housed in an old market hall dating back to the 19 th century. Here you will see a collection of Carthaginian, Roman, Arab and Visigothic antiquities. There is even a Roman statue of Hermes – a Greek god.
The Museo Salzillo This museum is dedicated to the work of Francisco Salzillo, a Mucia born sculptor. It is located in a Baroque chapel and among the works on display are the sculptures carried in the Holy Week procession. There is also a Nativity scene with more than 500 figures dressed in native costume.
Visit the modern part of the city and the busy port where you will see cruise ships coming and going. There are two 18-hole golf courses, and numerous tennis courts. Take a Cartagena city tour where you can visit the old town, and the castle of the Conception. This venue will give you stunning views of the city and the Byzantine rampart.
