Sail away to the Panama Canal, Central America or even cross the Pacific on the Amsterdam, the flagship of the Holland America line. This is one luxurious ship that will give you the feeling you are staying at a five star hotel. The wide range of activities and amenities you can only dream of will make this a cruise to remember. With 10 decks to explore, there is a crew of 647 to see to your every need. A large pool area provides plenty of room for you to relax on the deck, have a swim or even have a snack. Comfort and culture are the words to describe this ship whether you are travelling with the kids, a group of friends or on your own.
Accommodations
Enjoy the ocean view offered by 555 of the 690 cabins of the Amsterdam. With 17 cabin categories to choose from, you are sure to find something to suit your individual style and budget. Many of the suites have balconies and private verandas. The veranda suites have whirlpool tubs, private sitting areas, beds that convert to one king size bed and a sofa. Whichever category you book, you will receive complimentary supplies in the bathroom, bathrobes and plenty of closet and drawer space. Even inside rooms have a view of the Promenade deck where you may see many of your fellow passengers taking a stroll.
Dining
The two levels of the La Fontaine Dining Room offer luxurious sights at every turn. Enjoy the view along with exquisite food and service. The lighting really helps to bring out the hues of blue, orange and yellow of the décor. The Odyssey is another restaurant you can choose for dining on this ship or if you want something more casual, try the Lido, which is on the pool deck.
The Pinnacle Grill is located in the Odyssey and is the alternative restaurant of the ship. Here you can dine in an intimate setting, but there is a charge of $20 per person and reservations are required. Room service is also available 24 hours a day.
Entertainment
Spend the afternoon listening to singing in the Ocean Bar, but there are several others you can choose from for an evening of fun and entertainment. The Explorer’s Bar features mural size paintings and the Crows Nest Lounge contains statues from the Ming Dynasty. Erasmus Library is a good place to curl up with a good book, but if you want to keep in touch with home, you can check out the computers at the Internet Café. The Puzzle Corner is good for those that like a challenge and the Java Café has specialty coffees for you to try.
Queen’s Lounge can accommodate 557 passengers who want to take in a Broadway style show or musical. There is a variety of musical delights to choose from in the bars, such as instrumentals or disco where you can dance the night away. Take in a movie at the Wajang Theater or try your luck at the tables in the casino.
Check out the equipment at the Ocean Spa, where you can stay in shape on the cruise. With a spa and massage treatments available, you can surely relax and forget about your worries – at least for a while. There is an outdoor pool, if you want to catch some rays and the inside pool is flanked by two Jacuzzis. Jog or walk around the track on the Sports Deck or you may enjoy a game of tennis, volleyball, shuffleboard or ping pong.
For the little cruisers, there is a playroom and a video arcade. Supervised activities are available for children from ages 5 to 17. The dining room also features a children’s menu and babysitting is available for an extra charge. However, with the longer sailings offered by the Amsterdam, the passengers do tend to be of an older age.
Three formal nights means that you do have to bring dress clothes. Generally men wear tuxedoes or suits while women wear cocktail dresses or gowns. Most of the other times call for casually elegant dress. No jeans, shorts or t-shirts are permitted in the dining room.
