Once known as the Viking Star or the Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, this ship was renamed the Black Watch when it became part of the Fred Olsen Cruise Line in 1996. Although it was named for the legendary Scottish Regiment, it offers top of the line itineraries, service and overall value for the money you spend. The passengers are mainly British and the activities offered on board cater to their taste. Once you sail on this ship, you will surely return. However, don’t expect boisterous parties as most of the passengers prefer low key entertainment and early nights although the opportunity is there to burn the midnight oil.
Accommodations
With over 90% of the cabins having a view of the ocean, you won’t have to feel claustrophobic on the Black Watch. The cabins are quite roomy measuring 160 square feet, but there are larger cabins as well measuring 200 square feet. The inside cabins are a little smaller at 140 square feet. There are also luxury cabins, which are the only ones with private verandahs.
All the cabins come with twin beds, bathrooms with showers, hairdryers, complimentary toiletries, TV and floor to ceiling closets.
Dining
The Glentanar Restaurant is the main restaurant on the Black Watch and features open seating for the buffet breakfast and lunch. There are tables for 2, 4, 6 and 8, with a larger than usual number of tables for 2. The Garden Café is the alternative restaurant, which also offers open seating. Here you can attend several different themed buffets during the cruise featuring different ethnic cuisines. You can also have your breakfast and lunch at this restaurant. Even though you do have to carry your own tray, waiters will assist you if necessary. When the weather is warm, there is also an outdoor buffet lunch served at the Marquis Grill near the pool.
For the most part the food served is British fare, such as kippers, baked beans and grilled tomatoes for breakfast. At dinner, you can choose between fish and meat dishes as well as many other choices of salads, vegetarian cuisine and a wide range of desserts.
Entertainment
There are plenty of lounges on the Black Watch where you can chat with your friends and enjoy a drink. There are also lots of places where you can get cozy with a book or just be alone with your thoughts. The Lounge Deck is the busiest part of the ship because this is where the two restaurants are located. The Braemar Room is the place to gather before dinner and is also the venue for afternoon tea. Piper’s Bar sports a Scottish theme and it, too is a favorite gathering place before and after dinner. The Observatory Lounge offers a spectacular view both night and day and the Neptune Lounge is the setting for the themed shows in the evening. Check out a book from Explorer’s Library, one of the largest ship’s library you will find on a cruise ship. The Lido Lounge and the Star Night Club are also favorite places in the evening. If you want to do some chopping, this ship has two duty free shops and for those that want to try their luck, there is a casino. Have your hair done in the beauty salon, wash your clothes at the laundry and if you like to smoke, you can do so in various smoking sections on the ship, but not in the restaurants.
The fitness center on Sun Deck is where you will spend most of your time if you like to keep in shape. There is a generous amount of exercise equipment and you can engage in aerobics classes if you wish. There are Jacuzzi tubs, male and female saunas and three massage centers to make sure you feel completely relaxed. If you enjoy walking or jogging, there is a track on Lido Deck.
During your days at sea, you can enjoy lectures about the ports of call and a myriad of activities. These include bingo, bridge and dance classes. There is a computer station where you can surf the net or keep in touch with those at home. Movies are shown on a daily basis in the theatre and there are movies to choose from on the TV in your cabin.
Families are welcome on the Black Watch with organized activities to keep the children entertained.
