Whether you want to sail the Eastern or Western Caribbean, you will have the best time of your life on board the Carnival Valor. This is truly a ship filled with surprises at every turn. America’s Heroes is the theme of the ship and the décor is one of flashing gold intermingled with red, white and blue. Most of the staterooms are in between the decks containing the public rooms, which one would think would give easy access to these areas of the ship. However, passengers report that this is a hard ship to move around and often have to resort to finding detours to avoid long lines blocking the way. Smoking is permitted in many areas of the ship and these are adjacent to the main boulevard.
Accommodations
Although more than half of the outside cabins have balconies, they are quite small and not conducive to spending much time outside. The cabins, themselves, are quite spacious and have ample closet and drawer space. Bathrobes are provided and all of the rooms have shower stalls, unless you book a suite. The usual range of toiletries is included in the array of products placed in all bathrooms at the start of the cruise. There is satellite television in all the rooms, as well as a safe and minibar. In the suites, families can feel safe with children with the floor to ceiling windows. There are cabins with only portholes for windows and some of the outside cabins do have obstructed views.
Dining
With four main restaurants, you won’t have difficulty find a seat. The main rooms are called Lincoln and Washington, Rosie’s is a huge two-story restaurant and Scarlett’s is an alternative supper club, which charges a fee of $30 per person. At Rosie’s the style is buffet and there are usually long lines. There is also plenty of seating on the pool deck for those that prefer to eat outside. There are many tables for two and tables for ten, but the vast majority of seating in the main dining room consists of tables for four. There are four seatings for dinner and the service is very satisfying indeed. Dance at Scarlett’s even if you don’t eat there and for breakfast you can choose either of the restaurants and though the choices in food are quite limited, the food is fresh and well prepared.
Grill and pizza stations are positioned around the ship, as are deli and stations for Asian food. Enjoy fish and chips or a spa menu at one of these stations. If you prefer to eat breakfast in your room, there is a continental breakfast available and 24-hour room service for snacks, sandwiches and desserts is free of charge.
Entertainment
The lounge stretches the length of the ship and the sports bar is always crowded when there are sports events being televised. Check your email at the Internet Café or try your luck at Shogun Club Casino.
The days are filled with bingo and other games that are standard on cruise ships. Whatever your choice in music you will find it on the Valor from heavy metal to golden oldies. Let others hear your voice with karaoke at the Eagles Show Lounge or dance at the One Small Step. Ivanhoe is the venue for the main productions, but there are some seats where the view is blocked by the columns. Therefore, it is best to arrive early.
There are three adult pools and there is a wading pool for the smaller kids. The dramatic views form the spa will make you want to keep exercising during the cruise with the well-equipped gym. The many offerings here include such things as tooth whitening, in addition to massage and fitness classes. Jog on the track, take in a game of basketball or volleyball or even get instruction in golf.
For families travelling with children, the kids’ programs are divided into age groups, offering something for everyone. There is even a program for 15 to 17 year olds. The playroom is quite large and there is a soft play area for the smaller children. At night, babies under two are permitted here for babysitting.
Casual is the main dress code and even blue jeans are permitted for dinner. There are two formal nights and people do dress up for these occasions.
