The Costa Magica is an enormous ship that is waiting for you to arrive on a cruise that will take you to ports of your dreams as you sail away into the sunset. It carries 2,720 passengers and has 13 decks for you to explore while you’re at sea. The crew of 1,068 will pamper you and see to your every need. “Cruising Italian Style” takes on a new meaning aboard of this dream ship. The Magica is a magical cruise experience that shouldn’t be missed. It does seven day cruises around the Western Mediterranean, but will alternate between the Eastern and Western Caribbean and will do Bermuda trips also.
The ship will come to the United States during the winter months where there will be some changes in the casino, such as changing the Euro for American dollars and the buffet hours will be expanded.
Accommodations Magica holds 1358 accommodations for its passengers which gives everyone something that will suit their budget. Out of this 1358 there are 58 suites with balconies,464 ocean view with balconies, 321 ocean view without balconies and 501 inside cabins.
The standard rooms have ample closet space, deep vanity and desk, mini fridges and leather seating areas. The bathrooms are spacious with a vanity and shower, but you won‘t find many amenities in terms of bathroom soaps and lotions so you had better bring your own. Outside cabins have a window that is not divided by a bar to spoil the view. Another plus in your cabin is that ice is provided twice a day - in the morning and again at night.
All cabins have TV’s, but only one English Channel. However they do offer pay per view movies that could help entertain you. You will also find that these cabins have ample storage space and the lighting is terrific with bedside lamps and vanity lighting.
Veranda cabins are the same size as the standard cabins with the addition of a nice size balcony that is done in Plexiglas. The furnishings are contemporary Italian design. The doors to the balconies open out, so you may find that the banging of them during the night may become annoying. The numbers on all cabin doors are in Braille and there are 27 accommodations for the handicapped.
Dining
There are two dining rooms on this great ship, which are Costa Smerelda and the Portofino. Both operate on a set dining schedule, which most Americans find a bit odd with the first seating starting at 7 PM and the next seating starting at 9:15 PM. Costa Smerelda is located in the aft end of the ship and is surrounded by windows on three sides, which makes for a relaxed dining experience. Forward cabins get assigned to the Portofino, while cabins further to the aft get assigned to the Smerelda.
The food at both of these places is outstanding, with some of the courses being Braised Veal or other beef dishes. The waiters go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and to make sure you are seated with people that you can converse with during the meal. The appetizers are good but sometimes unusual, along with desserts and salads.
The Bellagio Buffet on the lido deck is big and expansive, but the food is excellent with several stations around the restaurant. Here you can get Italian food as well as international or grilled items and pizza. There is coffee set up around the clock for those that want to indulge. This becomes a pizza heaven from 9 PM to 3 AM.
If you want to dine in total elegance, then you’ll have to visit the Vincenza Tavernetta Club, which is a quiet 88 seat room which is fantastically elegant and your food is cooked to order. There is a 23 Euro charge to eat here, but it may be fun to do this once during your trip.
Room service is available 24 hours a day. You have a choice of cereals, Danish Pastries, juice, yoghurt and much more. There is a selection of three kinds of sandwiches for which you are charged 2 Euros. There are also children’s menus offered at all the restaurants.
Entertainment
You are certainly in for a treat on this ship as almost every room onboard the Magica has entertainment of some kind ranging from the pool band to individual vocalist to a classical duo in the atrium to a pianist in the Capo Lounge. Your nights will be filled with dancing, magic and acrobatics.
The sail away parties are most enjoyable with music and fun at the pool side bar to the Grand Bar Salento. You can also Tango, Polka, Waltz, or Cha-cha at the Salento or the Capri Lounge during the evening and sometimes into the night. Here whole families can dance together and learn all the steps to new dances. If you want a night out alone without the kids, then there is a babysitting service available.
In addition to this you will also find board games such as bingo, art auctions, plus games around the pool. The Squok Club on Deck 12 is an attraction for children. It is bright and cheerful with several computers that the kids can use. Here your child can experience being everything from a chef to a pirate.
The Saturnia Spa is located on the top of the ship and measures 4,600 square feet. Here you can enjoy Turkish baths, saunas, steam rooms and a large work out room. There are aerobic classes free of charge and there are spa treatments. You can visit one of the three pools that this ship offers plus one of the six hot tubs that you’ll find there. Try the jogging track to help your morning work out.
The dress code is casual during the day with dress up casual during the evening. There is one formal night and one semi formal night during a seven day cruise. In Europe 6 Euros a day is added to your account for crew gratuities and $10.00 a day when they sail the Caribbean.
