A brand new cruise ship is waiting to take you on a 7-day Alaskan cruise or to the Eastern or Western Caribbean. The Freedom of the Seas was launched in 2006 and can carry a whopping 3600 passengers. With 15 decks and all manner of entertainment and games, you will feel as if you are on the vacation of a lifetime. Learn how to scuba dive, use the golf simulator or jog around the track as just a few of the things you can do during the day. Families really enjoy the facilities offered for all ages, with a surf park and a sun deck just for children. Men can get their hair cut by a barber and try their hand at boxing in the ring. The pool areas really stand out and the shopping is divine. For those who travel on the Freedom of the Seas it is sure to become the ship they return to time and again.
Accommodations
With 1800 cabins to choose from, you will be sure to find something suited to your individual taste and budget. The cabins are more spacious than on other cruise ships and there are several new types of cabins, the Presidential Suites, designed just for families. These are located at the front of the ship, have large portholes beds that can be twin or queen and in the walk-in closet, you can even squeeze in another bunk. The largest room is the Penthouse Suite that can accommodate 14 guests and is divided into bedrooms. Over 800 of the cabins have balconies and 172 have a promenade view. The downside of choosing a cabin with a promenade view is that you will lose a large amount of your privacy. The balconies are also larger than normal giving you lots of space to spend time outside.
Dining
The main dining room on the Freedom of the Seas spans three decks and is divided into three separate restaurants – Leonardo’s, Isaac’s and Galilieo’s. There are two seatings per night and there is assigned seating, which means you don’t have a choice in your dining companions. If you prefer buffet, Windjammer serves this purpose well and takes up one whole side of the ship. Jade features Asian cuisine and the Chops Grille and Portofino have many new items on the menu. Johnny Rockets is located close to the children’s area of the ship with foods and portions consistent with what children like to eat.
Café Promenade is open 24 hours a day and is the place to go if you like designer coffee. The comfortable chairs help you feel quite relaxed as you sip your java. Ice cream is the main item at Ben and Jerry’s and Sorrento’s is the venue for pizza, but according to the reviews, it is not very good.
Entertainment
With the addition of a water park, adult passengers on the Freedom of the Seas will rarely have to deal with children in the adult pools. There are twin whirlpools in the pools on the main deck and the whirlpool in the Solarium offers a serene experience tucked as it is into windowed nooks with hammocks on the side. Take in a large scale production or enjoy the jazz band in the Viking Crown Lounge. The Crypt is a two-level disco and you might like to spend time in the Bull and Bear Pub or taste new wines at Vintages. The Book Nook is a cozy place to curl up and read, but the selection is limited, so you would be better off bringing your own books if you like to read.
Take in a game of volleyball, tennis or basketball, try rock climbing or ice skating. The fitness center has all kinds of exercise equipment, such as free weights, elliptical machines, bicycles and treadmills. There is also a fitness instructor on staff.
There is a children’s center with programs for kids of all ages. When the parents want a night to themselves, babysitting is available. Teens don’t have to mix with the younger children as there is a center just for them with youth counsellors on staff.
