As the fourth and last cruise ship of this branch of the Royal Caribbean family tree, the Jewel of the Seas has much the same décor and style as its sister ships, the Brilliance of the Seas and the Serenade of the Seas. With beautiful alternative restaurants, a main dining room and elaborate programs for families travelling with children, there is something for everyone on this ship. In spite of the fact that you may be cruising with more than 2100 other guests, you will not feel crowded, except in the pool area. There is plenty of space to move about freely. For those of you used to the cruise experience, you will find everything much better on this ship. As a luxury ship, the food, service and choice of activities is incomparable. With this experience comes a price in paying for designer coffees and other top of the line amenities.
Accommodations
For the most part, the cabins on the Jewel of the Seas are a bit smaller than you would expect on such a large ship. There is no difference between an outside cabin with a porthole and one with a balcony, except for the viewing vantage point. They all have twin beds that convert to queen, mini-refrigerators, television, safe and a desk and vanity. If you do have a stateroom with a balcony, you will have a little extra space in the sitting room area.
The suites, of course, are much larger with the smallest being equal to two standard cabins. The higher up you go in the suite category, the more elegant the rooms become. In the Owners’ Suite, for example, you have a flat screen TV and a whirlpool bath and if you want something really luxurious, opt for the Royal Suite, which has a baby grand piano.
Dining
The Tides Dining Room, which is the main restaurant consists of two levels and features open seating for breakfast and lunch, with two assigned seatings for dinner. Whatever meal you choose to have here, you will be surprised with the elegant food preparation and superb service. Other options for dining include the Windjammer’s Café, where you can enjoy buffet and casual dinners The Seaview Café if you want fast food, and the Solarium Café, which serves pizza. The steak at the Chops Grille is cooked just the way you like it and if you like coffee, then the coffee bar has a la carte coffee and dessert. There is also a 24-hour room service available if you prefer to dine in your cabin for any of your meals.
Entertainment
Shop to your heart’s content for designer logos or cheap jewellery or take in a cooking demonstration or an art auction. With a multitude of bars, you will find it hard to spend time in all of them, even on a six-day cruise. The Vortex Disco is the hangout for those who like to stay up late And the Hollywood Odyssey is the venue if you want to enjoy cozying up with your loved one while listening to music. Sports lovers will surely head to the Sports Bar and right off the casino you will find the Pit Stop Bar.
With three different areas containing computer terminals, you can check your email and send messages back home. The cost for using these computers is 50 cents a minute, but for a flat fee, you can have Internet in your stateroom. You do have to bring your own laptop because they are not provided. There is also a small library and cinema if youa re so inclined.
The daily activities are ones that you would expect to find on a cruise, such as bingo, contests and line dancing. In the Coral Theater you can take in a Broadway show and later take part in a Battle of the Sexes competition.
The main pool is the most congested area, with only some of the deck chairs in the shade. This means you may have to scrounge for a seat. Enjoy the 18th century décor in the spa where you can indulge yourself in a massage or one of the other relaxation treatments available or even get your teeth whitened. This area also has a steam room, Jacuzzi and an aromatherapy room, though you have to pay to use one of these options. Most of the top of the line exercise equipment is available for a fee of $10. You can also try your hand at rock-climbing, simulated golf, or mini-golf.
Adventure ocean is the name of the children’s program which takes in children from age 3 to 17. The younger kids have to be potty trained to use this facility. There are programs designed to suit the interest and ability levels and in some of them parents can also take part. The teenagers have their own facility so that they don’t have to mix with the younger kids.
During the day the dress code is casual and there are two formal nights onboard. The recommended gratuity is $3.50 per person per day for the dining room waiter and the cabin steward, $2 per person per day to the assistant waiter and $8.50 per person per day to the headwaiter. As on all other cruises a 15% gratuity is automatically added to your bar bill.
