Although most of the amenities on the Legend of the Seas are the same as you would find on other cruise ships belonging to Royal Caribbean International, this ship does have something extra that gives it its name. This ship is the American ambassador of the fleet sailing to many UK destinations from its homeport of London (Southhampton) during the summer. Renovations to the ship have resulted in amenities and activities more in tune with the wants and needs of the British passengers to whom it caters. For example, afternoon tea is a relay big event and ballroom dancing is very popular. When the ship is sailing in the UK, the pound is the currency rather than the US dollar. However, there are still decidedly American activities, such as rock-climbing and mini-golf.
Accommodations
With the design of the Legend of the Seas comes larger than normal standard staterooms. All of the cabins have private bathrooms, hair dryer, TV’ and wall safe. If you have a mini-suite or a stateroom in a higher category, you will have a mini-bar and refrigerator in the room, plus more space to move around. You may also have both a bathtub and a shower.
The accommodations range through 17 categories starting with inside cabins with upper and lower berths to family cabins and those with an outside balcony. With each upgrade the price also rises, but there are plenty of options to suit your taste and budget. All accommodations have ample room in the closets so you can unpack your luggage. There are also more than enough drawers and shelves and there are cupboards in the bathrooms.
Dining
The Romeo and Juliet is the formal dining room on the Legend of the Seas. With the high quality of food and service, you will think you are dining at a 5 star restaurant on land. The desserts are mouth watering and there are many dishes that are not usually served on cruise ships, such as scallop risotto. There is no alternative restaurant on this ship, so for dinner you don’t have a choice.
Join the lines at the buffet in the Windjammer Café, where you won’t be bored because of the view through the walls of windows. For those that like hot-dogs and hamburgers, you will get what you need at the Solarium Café and there is always room service to fall back on at any time of the day. Free ice cream, tea and coffee are always available outside Windjammers, while Ben and Jerry’s serves specialties, but you have to pay for those.
Entertainment
With all the glass, you won’t have any trouble admiring the view no matter what part of the ship you are in. The Schooner Bar is always filled to capacity and fun at sea is the name of the game at Anchors Aweigh. Enjoy a variety of acts and production shows at That’s Entertainment and there is always taped music for dancing in the lounges. Deck and pool games will help wile away the daytime hours when you are at sea or if you prefer to read the library is well-stocked.
The fitness center has a wide variety of exercise equipment and is inside, which is a good thing on days when the weather doesn’t cooperate. There is a mini-golf center, a steam room and sauna as well as other spa features, such as massages and aerobics classes. Specialty classes, such as Yoga and Pilates are also available but you do have to pay extra for these.
Children’s activities are designed to accommodate different age groups, such as the Aquanauts from ages 3 to 5 or the Navigators for the teenagers on the cruise. These programs operate from 9 in the morning until 10 at night.
