Sail out of New York Harbor to the Eastern Caribbean on board the Noordam. This is the newest ship of the Holland America Cruise Line and the fourth of its Vista-class ships. Designed for seniors and families as well as couples and singles, there is something for everyone on this ship. The HAL club and the Teen center will keep the younger set fully occupied so parents can have the cruise of their dreams without any worries about the children. This ship exudes excellence with such additions as massage showerheads in the bathrooms, flat screen TV’s and DVD players in the cabins. An expanded Lido Deck and 35 extra cabins greatly improves the amount of space. Along with all this you get a dedicated crew ready to indulge your every whim.
Accommodations
There are plenty of cabins with balconies and verandas to give you a view of the ocean as you sail along. There is only one deck with cabins that do not have a balcony. While the size of the cabins is not exactly roomy, you will have adequate space. The closets have ample storage space, but the desk is basically a place for you to sit while drying your hair. It is not amenable to spending a lot of time writing – but then who wants to sit and write letters while on a cruise.
The Eurotop beds are the ultimate in comfort. Standard rooms have double sheet blankets while the suites have duvets. Bathrobes are provided free of charge and are so comfy, you might want to wear them all the time.
The balconies are much larger than usual on the Noordam and are furnished with rattan patio furniture. Bathrooms are equipped with a bathtub/shower combo and are quite roomy. The lighting is not as bright as one would like to have it.
Depending on your choice of accommodations, you may have a few added perks. If you are in the Penthouse Suite, for example, you have your own private hot tub. The Deluxe veranda suites come with a concierge service and use of the Neptune Lounge.
Dining
The Lido Café is the most popular restaurant on the Noordam with food stations stretching the length of the ship. The salad station is really the only one that is buffet. With the wide range of food selections available, you can get just about any type of food you want here. All three meals are available here.
There are four seatings at the Vista Dining Room serving food that rivals the best restaurants. All the entrees are so appealing you will have a difficult time deciding what to eat and the food tastes exquisite – prepared to perfection. If you require special food, such as vegetarian, low-fat or low-sodium, this is possible by giving advance notice.
If you want to dine at the Pinnacle Restaurant, you will need to make reservations. Although there is a charge of $20 per person, the service and food is well worth it. In the pool area, you can get hot dogs, burgers and fries, but there is an excellent 24-hour room service available as well.
Entertainment
In the Explorations Café, you will find an Internet station, a well-stocked library, a coffee bar and meeting place all in one area. Get free popcorn as you watch movies at the Queen’s Lounge during the day or take cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Center. Shop to your heart’s content for specialty or ordinary items and there are church services held on Sunday.
There is an abundance of bars all with different themes. The Northern Nights Nightclub does tend to be crowded, but you can relax at the Piano Bar or listen to classical music at the Explorer’s Bar. Dance at the Ocean Bar or the Crow’s Nest or take in one of the shows at the Vista Show Room. The Noorsdam, as one of the Holland ships, continues with the tradition of having fabulous lounge performers and bands. Although the casino is not very big, it does have a fair number4 of slots and tables where you can see how lucky you are.
During the day, the staff holds all kinds of games and contests, with the shipbuilding contest being the most popular. Art auctions and bingo also take place.
If you want to keep in shape, the fitness room has a wide range of exercise equipment. Enjoy a relaxing treatment or massage at the Greenhouse Spa or take a yoga or pilates class. You can enjoy the pool in all kinds of weather or you can enjoy a walk on the Promenade Deck. The sports deck features a basketball and volleyball court.
There are plenty of activities for children from ages 3 – 17. The programs are geared to different age levels with something to interest everyone.
