The Norwegian Star is one ship that has something for everyone and you will get that feeling as soon as you board this beautiful liner. This is Free Style Cruising at it’s best and with a crew of 1100 to pamper you and 11 decks to explore, it is hard not to make this an unforgettable experience. Star boasts family friendly, handicap accessible rooms and areas and public places that range from intimate to exuberant. Here you will enjoy exciting activities day and night to make this one dream of a vacation.
Accommodations
There is a wide variety of cabins to chose from on this ship. From standard inside cabins to the luxurious Garden Villas, you’ll find something to suit your taste as well as your pocket book.
All standard rooms have a seating area that can be used as an extra bed if necessary, split bathrooms with the toilet on one side the sink in the middle and a shower on the other side with each of them closed off by glass doors. There are basic amenities in these rooms. They also have plenty of storage room plus a writing desk, fridge and TV. The balconies for those that have them are very spacious with two chairs and a table.
Mini-suites are really elegant with rich drapes, elegant bathrooms with tubs, a large seating area and elegant bedspreads and carpets. The draperies that separates the living quarters from the sleeping quarters are doubled lined to keep out any unwanted light. These accommodations also come with a concierge service.
There are two Garden villas on this ship and if you happen to be in one of them then you are in the lap of luxury. They measure 5,700 square feet and come complete with private gardens, saunas, hot tubs, 3 bedrooms, a living room, a pantry and a butler service. There are also Owner’s Suites, which measure 750 square feet of living space. Then there is the Penthouse with its wraparound verandas, if your lucky enough to get one at the aft of the ship.
Dining
Freestyle dining rules on this ship. You can eat at any time with whomever you please, which makes for a very relaxing trip. There are two main dining rooms here - the Aqua, located mid ship and the Versailles located aft. You will enjoy both very much. Versailles is very French, while the Aqua has a contemporary flair to old traditions. There are several tables for two in each restaurant.
Alternative dining can be found at the Endless Summer, which serves Tex Mex menus or the La Trattoria, which serves Italian food. Ginza specializes in Asian food and reservations have to be made early if you don’t want to be disappointed. There is also a surcharge of $12.50 to dine here. The SoHo Room serves an electric mix of items based on Pacific Rim cuisine. Le Bistro serves French food with a surcharge of $15.00 to $20.00 but is well worth it as the restaurant is very intimate. Then there is Cagney’s Steakhouse and the Blue Lagoon. The Bier Garden is lovely on a calm evening. The Garden Café is a place where you can eat breakfast, lunch and dinner if you want. They serve all meals. Then there is 24 hours room service available.
Entertainment
You will find the usual games and contest on this ship for daytime activities, but you will also find so much more. Enjoy fantastic productions at the Stardust Theatre and a host of talent in the bars and lounges that are scattered all over the ship. You can listen to jazzy piano music or boogie-woogie, classical or rock - it can all be found here. There is also a star search American Idol type contest that allows anyone to strut their stuff.
There is a big pool aft, flanked by two water slides. There is also an inside pool at Barong Spa, which is 40 feet long and 15 feet deep. There is a well equipped fitness centre that’s open 24 hours, Mandara Spa is lovely with a pool, saunas, steam baths and so much more. You will also find golf driving nets, shuffleboard, basket and volleyball, horseshoes and ping pong. This ship is a family dream that has more than one program for the children as well as sitters when you need them.
The dress code is definitely casual with one formal night per voyage. Tipping is $10.00 per day per person which usually covers everything.
